What is a trench box?
A trench box, also called a shield, is a steel or aluminum structure set in a trench so that if the walls collapse, the box holds the soil off whoever is working inside it. It does not hold the trench open; it protects the space the crew occupies.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Shoring holds the walls back. A shield lets the walls do whatever they are going to do and keeps the failure off your crew. Which one a job needs comes down to what is around the trench: shoring where the ground must not move because a road or a foundation is next to it, a box where the point is simply getting people home.
When it is required
OSHA requires a protective system in any trench 5 feet deep or more, unless the excavation is entirely in stable rock. The three options are sloping the walls back, shoring, or a shield. Under 5 feet nothing is required by depth alone, but a competent person who sees a cave-in hazard can still call for protection, and they are right to.
The rules crews break
- Riding the box. Nobody is in the shield while it is being installed, removed, or moved vertically. That move is when boxes shift.
- Digging deeper than the box. A shield is rated by its manufacturer's tabulated data. Excavating below the bottom of the box, to set a fitting or chase a leak, puts the crew in unprotected trench.
- Spoil against the edge. Excavated material and equipment stay at least 2 feet back from the edge. A pile at the lip is surcharge load on the wall you are standing next to.
- No way out. In a trench 4 feet or deeper, a ladder, ramp or steps must be within 25 feet of lateral travel of every worker.
Past 20 feet
Once a trench reaches 20 feet, OSHA's tabulated options stop applying and the protective system has to be designed by a registered professional engineer. Box or not, that is engineering, not judgment.
