Pipe & conduit weight calculator

Weight per foot of HDPE, PVC, or PP pipe from its size and wall, total weight for a run, and how many feet are on a reel from the reel weight. For loading trucks, sizing a puller, and checking a bill of lading.

Subtract the reel/spool tare before you use its shipping weight here, or you will read long. Coilable poly (1.25" and under) reels in thousands of feet; larger IPS sizes ship in sticks, not coils.

Common questions

How much does HDPE pipe weigh per foot?

It depends on the outside diameter and the wall. Weight per foot equals the wall cross-section area times the material density — for HDPE about 59.6 lb per cubic foot. A 2 inch IPS (2.375 in OD) DR11 pipe runs about 0.6 lb per foot; a 4 inch DR11 is roughly 2.3 lb per foot. Enter your size and wall to get the exact number.

What is DR or SDR on a pipe?

Dimension Ratio — the outside diameter divided by the wall thickness. A lower DR means a thicker wall and a higher pressure rating: DR9 is heavier-walled than DR11, which is heavier than DR17. Since wall equals OD divided by DR, the DR is all you need (with the OD) to get the weight.

How many feet of pipe are on a reel?

Divide the reel's pipe weight by the weight per foot. If a coil weighs 1,200 lb of pipe and the pipe is 0.6 lb per foot, that is about 2,000 feet. Just be sure you are using the pipe weight, not the shipping weight — subtract the wooden reel or steel spool tare first, or you will read long.

Why does pipe weight matter for a bore?

Two reasons. Loading and hauling — a few thousand feet of larger IPS pipe is real tonnage on the truck. And pullback — the pipe's weight, buoyed by the drilling fluid in the hole, is a big part of the tension your rig has to overcome, so knowing weight per foot is the starting point for sizing the pull.

Is PVC heavier than HDPE?

Yes. PVC is denser (about 87 lb per cubic foot versus 60 for HDPE), so for the same size and wall, PVC weighs roughly 45 percent more. Switch the material in the calculator to compare.

Running fiber or utility bores?

TrackOver's FiberOps tracks reels and footage, 811 mark-outs, permits, splices, and a bore log with depth of cover — plus crew-readable route maps from your KMZ designs and a live build link for the prime.
